The continental dune

The continental dune
From when the dune threatened to engulf the population.
The historian Pella y Forgas attributes the formation of this dune to the diversion of the river Ter that the Count of Empúries Ponç Hug ordered made in 1302.

Aforetime, this river flowed to the north of l'Escala and its course constituted an insurmountable barrier for the advance of the dunes since the river returned to the sea all the sand carried by the wind.

When this natural barrier disappeared, the north wind was able to transport the sands to the south, crossing the Montgrí massif and thus altering the environment.

When this natural barrier disappeared, the north wind was able to transport the sands to the south, crossing the Montgrí massif and thus altering the environment. This fact ended up threatening life and the local economy, since orchards and houses were covered by the sand.

At the end of the 19th century, the project of the engineer Primitiu Artigas was carried out, through which the sands of the dunes were fixed by planting grasses that later allowed the subsequent planting of young pines.

This forest developed and today it is a refuge for birds and small mammals.
